STOP LETTING FEAR HOLD YOU BACK: HOW TO AVOID A LIFETIME OF REGRET

Allow me to take a short break from the Knowing God Series for a moment. Let’s call this pause a “short commercial break.” (Yes, just for a moment. 😊)

But on a more serious note, I feel like we need to talk about something important.

When Fear Stops Us Before We Even Begin

This morning, I was doing something very ordinary—washing clothes. Nothing extraordinary, just a normal chore.

But something interesting happened.

Before I started, I stood there staring at the pile of dirty clothes. In my mind, the task suddenly felt overwhelming. I began thinking about how long it would take, how tiring it would be, and how much effort it would require. The more I thought about it, the more discouraged I felt before I had even begun.

For a moment, the thought of starting almost scared me.

But eventually, I started anyway.

And to my surprise, about one hour later, I was already finishing up the last part and hanging the clothes out to dry.

That’s when it hit me.

The thing that had felt so big, so exhausting, and so overwhelming in my mind… actually took far less time and energy than I had imagined.

Standing there with the last piece of clothing in my hands, I realized something deeper: how often I have allowed fear to hold me back from doing things I needed to do.

The Fear of the “What Ifs”

Just like I did this morning, many of us allow the fear of the unknown to stop us from moving forward.

Our minds start asking endless questions:

What if it doesn’t work out?
What if I fail?
What if things go wrong?
What if…

And before we know it, the “what ifs” become chains that keep us stuck.

Days pass.

Weeks follow.

Months come and go.

Then suddenly, years have passed—and nothing has changed.

We stayed in the same place because fear convinced us not to move.

And the most painful part is this: eventually we begin to look back. We see the time that slipped away and the opportunities we never took. Slowly, regret begins to settle in and we now wished we tried, atleast.

Sometimes, it even reaches a point where we feel it may be too late to change certain things.

Don’t Let Fear Win

Fear has a way of quietly stealing opportunities from us.

If we allow it, it can rob us of experiences, growth, purpose, and even joy. It can leave us constantly wondering what life could have been.

And if you ask me, that may be one of the worst ways to live.

To be alive, yet unable to look forward to tomorrow with excitement because fear prevented you from stepping into the possibilities of today.

To constantly think about all the things you could have tried, but never did.

I know we must be wise. We must think carefully and make good decisions. But we should never allow our decisions to be controlled entirely by fear of the unknown.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is face that fear and take the step anyway. Because sometimes it is better we die  trying than to live wth the anxiety of what could have been.

Try, Even If It’s Uncertain

That simple moment with a pile of laundry reminded me of a powerful truth:

Many things that scare us before we begin are not as overwhelming once we start.

The fear is often bigger in our minds than the reality itself so do it afraid.

And because of that, I believe something deeply:

It is far better to live knowing you tried than to live constantly wondering what could have been.
