Many times we read the parable of the four types of soils and as Christians we somehow believe we are like the fourth soil, which is able to support growth and bear fruits.
But the truth is most Christians are like the other soils which could not support growth. We go to church every Sunday, listen to sermons prepared for us, but immediately we leave church, we forget it as if we never heard it.
Sermons are not formal routines or boxes that needs to be checked. They are our weekly exhortation, words we need for growth, to bear fruits and to help us to be firmly rooted in God. They are supposed to produce fruits, righteous fruits in our character and lives. They are supposed to prune us weekly.
It’s Because We Just Listen
James 1:22 tells us to be doers of the word not just listeners. But most of us only listen for listening sake.
After dancing during praises and song ministrations, we lose attention. We just struggle through sermons. We keep watch at the clock, wondering if the pastor will end on time. So we barely listen to do, we only listen for listening sake.
Just like the other three soils which could not support growth, we occupy our minds with many things other than listening to do. We aren’t able to receive the word because we never plan to.
Let’s Do Better
We can actually do better. Let’s renew our minds about Sunday sermons. Let’s us not treat it like another checklist for Sunday service routine.
Make sure you leave church with a word, hold on to the word , share the word and let your life align to it.
To be like the good soil, you must decide to be the doer of the word not just a listener.
